There are a few different types of editing your manuscript might need. If you feel like you need more structural guidance or coaching during the writing stage, you'll want to find a developmental editor. If you're done with the writing and like the overall structure of your manuscript, but feel like the style or tone could be tightened up, you need a line editor. If you're happy with everything style-wise but need someone to look at the mechanical details like grammar, punctuation, and formatting, a copyediter can help.

Line editing
Addresses stylistic tone at the sentence level.

Condenses and clarifies text to hone your voice

Checks for repetition and redundancy​

Copyediting
Addresses mechanics, internal consistency, and some formatting.

Corrects spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure

Checks for consistency in verb tense, capitalization, hyphenation, and word usage

Checks for adherence to style manual (generally The Chicago Manual of Style) and preferred dictionary

Checks contents page against chapters, checks footnote/endnote numbers against text, checks figures, tables, lists, etc., checks alphabetization and formatting of bibliography/reference list

Depending on level of edit (light, medium, or heavy) flags or corrects wordy/convoluted sentences, and points out or corrects factual inconsistencies

​Both copyediting and line editing will include a style sheet - a document that includes all of your stylistic conventions (capitalization, hyphenation, punctuation, word use, number use, etc.), an alphabetical list of relevant words and names, and examples of reference styles, if needed.

How the process works
I will provide you with a price quote based on a manuscript assessment, a small sample edit, and your desired turnaround time. Starting rates are as follows: copyediting $.03/word, line editing $.04/word.
